BAABS™ Blasting Assist Systems: Reduce Fatigue & Improve Control
Reducing operator fatigue and keeping a consistent standoff distance are two of the biggest performance wins in abrasive blasting. That’s exactly what the BAABS™ (Blasting Accessories & Assist Bracket System) from Axxiom Schmidt delivers—paired with the G3 deadman (electric or pneumatic), a Thrust Management Brace Assembly, and a side grip for precise control.
What Is BAABS™?
BAABS™ is an ergonomic brace-and-rail system that helps the blaster manage nozzle thrust, maintain a steady angle, and reduce arm, wrist, and shoulder strain during long shifts. The assembly integrates the G3 deadman (electric or pneumatic), includes a Thrust Management Brace to transfer force to the body/core, and a side grip for fine control—all designed to improve productivity and surface quality while reducing operator fatigue.
Who Benefits
- Bridge & structural steel work where long vertical passes are common
- Shipyards, tanks, and penstocks requiring extended overhead or vertical blasting
- Industrial maintenance crews targeting consistent profiles across large surfaces
- Any job where operator comfort, quality, and consistency impact production
Axxiom Schmidt BAABS™ Models We Carry
- BAABS™ with Electric G3 Deadman — integrated electric G3, Thrust Management Brace Assembly, BAABS™ side grip
- BAABS™ with Pneumatic G3 Deadman — integrated pneumatic G3, Thrust Management Brace Assembly, BAABS™ side grip
Rail options: Long Rail, Short Rail, Compact, Subcompact (choose based on access and working envelope).
Electric vs. Pneumatic G3 Deadman: How to Choose
- Electric G3: Crisp signaling and helpful on longer runs; choose when site power and cables are easy to manage.
- Pneumatic G3: Simple, rugged, and familiar to many crews; great when you prefer air-only control circuits.
Both are designed for fast actuation with a true “deadman” fail-safe—pair with reliable cabling/hose and regular function checks for safety.
Selecting the Right BAABS™ Rail Length
- Long Rail: Long, flat passes on tanks or hulls; fewer reposition moves per pass.
- Short Rail: General-purpose rail for mixed access and frequent repositioning.
- Compact: Scaffolds, manlifts, and congested steel where reach is limited.
- Subcompact: Tight interiors, complex geometries, or close-quarters detail work.
Setup & Safety Checklist
- Mount BAABS™ per the rail size; adjust brace pad height to your stance and PPE layers.
- Verify G3 deadman actuation and full system shutoff before each shift.
- Confirm couplings, gaskets, and whip checks are installed and in good condition.
- Check nozzle holder fit-up and standoff; ensure side grip tightness for accurate aiming.
- Wear appropriate PPE (blast hood, suit, gloves, hearing protection, Grade D air).
Pair BAABS™ with the Right System
- Blast Pots (Rental) — pressure-hold/release systems for continuous production
- Air Compressors (Rental) — size to nozzle CFM with a 20–25% buffer
- Dust Collectors (Rental) — visibility and compliance in containment
- Blast Hoods & Respiratory — keep crews safe and comfortable
Why Crews Choose BAABS™
- Less fatigue on long pulls and vertical/uphand work
- More consistent nozzle angle and standoff—better, repeatable profiles
- Improved control reduces rework and helps manage media use
- Flexible rail options to match the jobsite and access constraints
